Mike Andrew McLean holds a BFA in Media Arts from NSCAD University and an MFA from the University of Victoria. McLean’s work references photography’s origins while challenging the predominant digital modes of image production today. Its subject matter is often drawn from the means of its own making, and calls to question the conditions behind the obsolescence of certain technologies, hand-based skills and systems of knowledge. His work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions at galleries including Vancouver’s Contemporary Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Richmond Art Gallery, Open Space, Southern Alberta Art Gallery, and Gallery 44. His work has been profiled in Canadian Art, The Globe and Mail, Blackflash Magazine, The Georgia Straight and numerous exhibition publications and catalogues. McLean has worked as a sessional instructor and lecturer, and led workshops in digital, analog and historical-based photographic processes. He is currently the Media Technologist in the Visual Art Department at Camosun College in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
